Roukani

Built at the foot of the Hill "Parathiri" (height of 472 m) at an altitude of 410 metres and at a distance of 33 kilometers on the road Heraklion-Profitis Ilias, Kyparissos – Roukani-belongs to the Regional Section of the municipality in accordance with the "Kallikratis" plan. The inhabitants are farmers and ranchers with their respective products.

The name of the village appears for the first time in a document of 1212 (il monasterio di s. Giovani Crissostomo a Rucano) and then in other documents, notarial and Ducal archive of Chandax. For the first time as recorded in the Census of 1583 with the name Rucani and then recorded in all censuses until today.

The village's etymologisis effort by Kosta Roukanis, who as Freedman indicated in the catalogues of the Venetian Treaty-Kallergi the 1299 rather shaken, after the name meets in document before 88 years. The village like other 20 on the island, had bought the Cardinal Bessarion when was Latin Patriarch of Constantinople in 1463 and all along the bequeathed his successors.

Inside the village is the Byzantine Church of Saint John of Rigologoy dating from the 11th century with remains of frescoes and is protected by the 13th Eforia Antiquities for the significance of. The church celebrates the Holy on August 29th with nice festival organized by the cultural association of the village.

The great edifice is an excellent sample of a cruciform Dome Church subscribed. This is a new architectural type of the temple that is the typical expression of the Byzantine naodomias, and is a creation of the Macedonian Renaissance.

The current village the visitor has to see two beautiful Fountains, the "Cold Faucet Faucet" and "Pigs" in the outing. I tasted (can be purchased) the magnificent bee and cheese products from local producers of the village, while if you visited the village in the production of raki season will find that the whole village "passes" of the wine presses and the rakokazana that exist.

Will met the Weaver of the village with its beautiful creations of weavers, while it may "treat" from the four friendly farmers at their sheep pens.

I also met the local hospitality three cafes can participate if they organize his visit toward the end of August in Nice and hearty four-day program of events organized by the cultural association from 26 to 29 of the month in honour of the Saint.
