For the first time the name of the village meets in notarial documents of the 13th century and subsequent of the Ducal archive of Chandax. Recorded with approximately the same present name (Petrokefalo or Petrokefala) in all censuses from 1577 until today.
The distinctiveness of the shape of the Hill on which it is built (in the form of a human head), shall be deemed to have given the village's name, or in another version, the settlement was named after its first settler, Peter, owner of Hill.
The village suffered the wrath of Enceladus in 1856 (like many other villages in the region) and was completely destroyed, losing his beautiful older traditional architecture. Quickly rebuilt with newer buildings are of course very interesting architectural elements of the 19th century (House of Krasadaki).

Patron Saint of the village is the Church of Panagia which celebrates on September 8th, so run feast with good traditional feast of the Educational Association of the village, who develops and various other cultural activities.
Features of the village are the clear characteristics of walls (Fortress) type. In the 1970s excavations carried out in the region were found: a carved Tomb with bath type Larnaca, a sarcophagus and burial jars.
