Archaeological sites

The entire hinterland of Heraklion's municipality from East to West and from North to South is full of archaeological sites that testify to the economic and cultural wealth, but also the continuation of life itself over time.

Unfortunately, from the Minoan period and late Antiquity with the exception of the archaeological site of Knossos and several Byzantine Monuments, all other positions are not open to visitors. In many of these countries there is even the possibility of access and many of them no longer exist. For many other positions the information is minimal after concern rescue and emergency excavations. Most of these involve graves. The oldest has been found in Gorgolaini, whence the existence of circular building, apparently vaulted tomb with hundreds of bones and many broken vessels of Early Minoan years. They are tombs of known type of Postpalatial years, as those who found in Gazi and Kabrochwri, namely the vaulted into the rock with a short road which is usually locked up with barrier. The tombs and sarcophagi contained here clay decorated with geometrical, symbolically and with themes taken from the world of plants and animals

From a modest have derived Voutes clay grate and section thymiatirioy as well as many fragments of earthen sarcophagi AM III period, many of which save decoration with stylized octopuses, papyroeidi and wavy lines.

Such are the cases of ancient Lykastoy probably between the Prophet Elijah and the sacred mountain, the ancient Pannonas which I placed in the vicinity of this ancient Asites and Rafkou which is identical with the settlement of Agios Miron to but beyond there sources and archaeological evidence.
