Development Of Hinterland Municipality Of Heraklion

The surrounding area of the Municipality of Heraklion along with its rich traditional products, is adopting the modern spirit of entrepreneurship and has expanded and is being modernized also in other business sectors.

It focuses on the processing, standardizing and promoting these traditional products while shows a strong contemporary residential (with restorations, reconstructions, etc.), cultural (local and international events range), touristic (agritourist lodgings, etc.), industrial, craft and business development.

The visitor - particularly near the harvesting period - encounters modern factories operating, processing olives (mills), packaging units and standardized oil processing plants packing, marketing and exporting olive products (savory olives such as throumbes, tsakistes, kolymbades, stafidolies, olive paste, etc.) with recognizable variety names that have won international awards. The extra virgin olive oil from the olive trees of the Koroneiko variety, (acidity 0.1 to 1%) is a firmly recognized value of the region.

Many plants are operating with modern reception and processing units, for various types of wine grapes, produced in either conventional or organic vineyards in many villages (eg Dafnes, Stavrakia, Ag. Myron, Asites, Venerato, Profitis Ilias, Avgeniki, Skalani, etc.). These plants are also producing internationally known varieties and products, recognized as PDO and have added many local and international awards to their credit.

Famous wines such as the White (dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet), the Red (dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet), the rosé (Rose) (dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet), the Liasto (from sun-dried grapes) come from unique varieties (like Kotsifali, Vilana, Athyri, Muscat, Plyto, Thrapsathiri, Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet, Merlot, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Ladikino, Liatiko, Assyrtiko, Vidiano, etc.) and consist the identity of the area, in which they are produced and are marketed all over the world.
